Elmina Sharks player Jay Asamoah Kola has been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for an alleged assault on referee Eso Doh Morrison during a Division One League match against Swedru All Blacks on Sunday.
Asamoah Kola is accused of breaching Section 13 (1)(k) of the GFA’s Disciplinary Code after he was filmed attempting to strike the referee with a stone. The incident occurred following the 1-0 defeat of Elmina Sharks, when referee Morrison was confronted by a group of aggressive fans as he made his way to the tunnel leading to the dressing room.
In the viral video, Asamoah Kola is seen picking up a stone from the ground and swinging it at the referee.
He was stopped by the intervention of police officers and an unidentified individual before he could make contact.
The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over violence in Ghanaian football, with this attack following the fatal stabbing of an Asante Kotoko fan earlier this month.
