President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to uphold the nation’s long-standing peace and oppose all forms of intolerance, extremism, and division.

He stressed that the message of Eid al-Adha is particularly pertinent at a time when many communities around the world are struggling with war, bloodshed, and widening divisions.

This was as he spoke at the National Eid al-Adha celebrations held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday, May 27.

He pointed out that Ghana continues to stand out as an example of harmonious coexistence, where people from all ethnic and religious origins coexist.

He urged individuals to preserve the nation’s common towns, schools, companies, and even familial ties that Christians and Muslims have shared for generations.

He called on people to actively promote peace, tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect in their daily contacts, emphasising the necessity of long-term unification across all religious and ethnic divides.

Additionally, President Mahama urged Ghanaians to resist extremism, political intolerance, ethnic divisions, and any activities that jeopardise Ghana’s stability, warning against behaviours and ideas that could erode national cohesiveness.

“I urge all Ghanaians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, to continue promoting peace, tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect,” he stated.

The President further warned against political intolerance, tribal divisions, extremism, and any acts capable of undermining Ghana’s stability and national cohesion.

“We must reject extremism, political intolerance, tribal divisions, and all acts that threaten our national unity,” he added.

President Mahama’s remarks formed part of activities marking the Eid al-Adha celebration, one of the most significant festivals observed by Muslims worldwide.
