The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the management of the University of Ghana to reduce its residential facility fees by 25%, lowering the fee from GHC3,000 to GHC2,500 for both new and returning students.

The directive came following a meeting between the Minister, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Students Representative Council (SRC) on February 6, 2025, in Accra.

“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and to engage with the SRC in the future on any fee announcements,” Mr. Iddrisu said during the meeting.

In response, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo confirmed that the University would comply with the minister’s order. “We have listened to both our Minister and our students, and we can afford to reduce the fees by 25 percent across the board. Moving forward, there will be more adequate engagement with students,” she assured.

While students welcomed the reduction, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, President of the SRC, called for a refund for students who had already paid the original fees. “We are thankful for the reduction, as it will ease some of the financial burden on our parents, but there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he said.

According to University management, 80% of students have already paid their residential facility fees.
