Ghana’s Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a nationwide plan to upgrade at least 10 Category B senior high schools to Category A status.

The move, he said, is part of efforts to ease the pressure on top schools and ensure fair placement for students across the country.

Speaking ahead of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Triennale in Accra, the Minister explained that many regions, including the North East, Savannah, Oti, and Western North, have no Category A schools—putting students at a disadvantage.
To address this, the Ministry will also upgrade 10 Category C schools to Category B, with accompanying infrastructure such as classrooms, dormitories, and teaching materials.

The ADEA conference, to be held from October 29 to 31 at Labadi Beach Hotel, will bring together over 350 participants, including 30 African education ministers and partners like the World Bank, UNESCO, and the Gates Foundation.

It will focus on improving education through technology, innovation, and investment.
The Minister also confirmed that 6,200 unpaid teachers will soon be fully absorbed into the system and receive their outstanding salaries following cabinet approval.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to open the conference.
