The ECOWAS Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from the West African bloc for the position of Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship comes to West Africa in 2027.
The announcement was made on Friday, December 12, 2025, by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, via his official Facebook page.

Hon. Ablakwa further noted that the Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt the Council’s declaration at its upcoming session on Sunday. He expressed gratitude to his colleague ministers and the regional body for their overwhelming support.

“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” Ablakwa stated.
This endorsement positions President Mahama as the consensus candidate to lead the African Union, reflecting ECOWAS’s confidence in his leadership and Pan-African vision.
