President John Mahama has appointed Dr Abiba Zakariah as the acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), effective from Monday, February 17, 2025.
Dr Zakariah, a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, takes over from Michael Andoh, who has served as acting Commissioner since April 2023.
The new commissioner has held significant leadership roles, including Group Chief Operating Officer at WAICA Reinsurance Corporation, a reinsurance company within the West African Insurance Companies Association.
She resigned from the position in 2024.
Dr Zakariah is also the founder and Managing Director of Strategist Consortium, a management consulting firm.
A Chartered Insurer and Fellow of both the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana, Dr Zakariah holds a BSc (Hons.) Degree and an MBA from the University of Ghana, Legon, as well as a PhD in Management Studies from the Swiss Management Centre.
Her career began at SIC Insurance Company (formerly the State Insurance Corporation).
As Commissioner, Dr Zakariah is expected to introduce measures to broaden insurance coverage and stimulate sector growth.
Stakeholders have called for a review of the minimum capital requirements for insurance companies, with Dr Zakariah anticipated to lead discussions on policy changes aimed at strengthening the financial stability of the industry.
