Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the New Patriotic Party to the next general elections in 2028. Over 211,000 cast ballots Saturday in a nationwide primary that ended with former Vice President securing the flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections.

Electoral Commission officials confirmed Bawumia’s victory at party headquarters after results were collated from over 300 polling centers across all 16 regions. He won 110,645 votes, representing 56.48 percent of the total valid ballots.
The contest drew five aspirants, including former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former lawmaker for Assin Central.
Party leaders described the race as keenly contested, underscoring the stakes as the NPP prepares its campaign to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
