Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Defence Minister, has reiterated his commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to restore lasting peace to Bawku, following a resurgence of violence in the area.
Since late December 2024, Bawku has been grappling with escalating tensions, primarily stemming from a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups.
The conflict has led to casualties, displacement of residents, and growing insecurity despite previous peace-building measures and security interventions.
In response to the worsening situation, President John Dramani Mahama visited Bawku on January 14, 2025, to assess the situation and engage with local leaders, security forces, and affected communities.
His visit was part of a broader strategy to enhance security and explore both diplomatic and traditional conflict resolution methods.
Following a critical meeting on February 12, Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah took to social media to reaffirm the government’s resolve in de-escalating tensions.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence, included key figures such as Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.
Dr. Boamah emphasised the government’s commitment to implementing a comprehensive peace roadmap, which includes a mix of military presence, community engagement, and dialogue with traditional leaders.
“As President Mahama has assured the people, we are determined to continue with our roadmap to peace through traditional means,” he said.
“Our goal is to restore peace and stability to Bawku and its surrounding areas, and I remain fully committed to supporting that effort.”
