Abubakar Sadick, an absentia prisoner, was apprehended by the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for his involvement in a car robbery syndicate operating throughout Ghana. Abubakar and his suspected co-conspirators will approach car rental companies pretending to be renting them for missions in Northern Ghana while robbing them in remote locations.

They will also pretend to be members of a religious organization or a non-governmental organization. During a joint Police/Cyber Security Authority (CSA) press conference on Monday, Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), disclosed that Abubakar had rented a Toyota Land Cruiser for missions, only to rob the vehicle at Malzeri near Yendi and tie the driver to a tree.

Another Land Cruiser was stolen under the same pretext in January 2023, in a similar incident. According to COP Donkor, Abubakar had been on the police wanted list since November 11, 2022.

According to her, a Toyota Vitz was also stolen and subsequently sold in Bolgatanga in April 2023. Through investigations and persistent intelligence gathering, the police were able to identify Abubakar as the main suspect, and they issued an arrest warrant for him.

After that, COP Donkor said, he was added to the Interpol red notice, the police wanted list, and the immigration stop list. Abubakar escaped before being extradited, despite the Burkina Faso Police informing the police that he had been arrested in February 2023.

“On July 28, 2025, Abubakar Sadick was finally arrested in Accra through a joint operation involving the CID’s Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and National Security” COP Donkor mentioned that he was helping the police with their investigation.

“It is of interest to note that the Cape Coast High Court had previously sentenced the suspect in absentia to 25 years’ imprisonment in hard labor for a 2021 robbery in Brenman Asikuma” she stated. Abubakar was linked to several other auto thefts that are being investigated, according to COP Donkor.

Abubakar was linked to some other auto thefts that are being looked into, according to COP Donkor. She encouraged everyone to report to the CID Headquarters to help with investigations while the alleged accomplices were being sought, especially car rental companies and victims of similar incidents.

According to Divine Selase Agbeti, Director General of the Cyber Security Authority, the partnership demonstrated a common dedication to guaranteeing a more secure and safe online environment for all Ghanaian citizens and companies.
