Ghana is set to hold elections for regional representatives to the Council of State today, February 11, with 155 candidates vying for positions across all 16 regions.

The Council of State, a constitutionally mandated advisory body, plays a key role in governance by offering guidance to the President on policy and national affairs.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), 145 men and 10 women have filed nominations, highlighting a significant gender gap in the contest.

While female representation remains low, officials see their participation as a step toward greater inclusion in national decision-making.

Candidates were required to meet eligibility criteria, including proof of Ghanaian citizenship, good standing in society, and compliance with administrative requirements before the nomination deadline.

Unlike parliamentary and presidential elections, the Council of State selection follows an Electoral College system rather than a public vote.

Each of Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies nominates two representatives, who will then cast ballots to elect the regional representatives.

The electors are expected to assess candidates based on their experience and ability to contribute to national governance.

Established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State provides advisory support to the President on governance, economic development, and national security.
