Violence broke out during the Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, as a group of unidentified individuals stormed the election centre, disrupting the sorting and counting of ballots.
Eyewitnesses reported that the muscled men overturned tables, damaged ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials, forcing the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend the process.
The unrest is believed to have been sparked by the unexpected defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was seen as a frontrunner in the election.
Supporters, reportedly upset by the results, allegedly instigated the chaos and demanded a review of the outcome.
Security personnel struggled to contain the situation, prompting a temporary halt to the election proceedings. Additional law enforcement officers have been deployed to restore order and protect electoral materials.
The Electoral Commission has not yet issued an official statement on the incident or provided details on the next steps regarding the election results.
