Following his release from detention at EOCO, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition NPP, made a notable return to the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3. His arrival was met with enthusiastic supporters celebrating his return.
Chairman Wontumi had spent close to a week in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) before his release. He expressed deep gratitude to the leadership and grassroots members for their unwavering support during his ordeal.
Later that day, he visited the NPP’s Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at his private office in Accra.
Additionally, Chairman Wontumi paid a visit to former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, to personally thank him for his support during his detention. Acheampong played a crucial role in facilitating Wontumi’s bail process, helping him meet the necessary conditions for his release.
Wontumi’s visits, according to some Political observers, are a strategic effort to reinforce alliances within the party, particularly as the NPP prepares for upcoming elections. His swift return to political engagements signals a renewed focus on consolidating support, with some observers speculating that he may be positioning himself for a bid for the national Chairmanship.

Isaac Nsiah of the Institute of African Studies acknowledges that the party’s current factional divisions, though commonplace, could be used against him in future party elections. However, he is quick to assert that Wontumi’s arrest, despite its complex implications, will not have any impact on him.
” The party is already polarized. And you know, it will be used against him by the other factions in the party. The decision not to contest is left for him to decide. His arrest is multifaceted in terms of the rationales.” He told Bullet online.
