In response to Ghanaian athletes Rose Yeboah and the men’s 4×100-meter relay team’s outstanding performances at the World Athletics Championships, Lawrencia Dziwornu, a member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee and a member of Parliament for Akuapem South, has called for both parliamentary and presidential recognition. On Sunday, she announced this in a press statement.
After placing 15th in the Women’s High Jump final on her first try, Rose Yeboah became the first Ghanaian athlete to make it to the championship’s final in 20 years.
A new national record of 37.79 seconds was set by the quartet of Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Rashid Saminu, who surged into the relay final for the first time since 2022 and just missed a podium finish by 0.04 seconds.
Similar to how the Black Queens were hailed following their bronze victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Dziwornu commended the athletes for their tenacity and historic accomplishments and urged the state to properly recognize them.
According to the legislator, the athletes’ success proves Ghana can shine internationally with proper support and planning.
“Rose Yeboah’s achievement is historic and inspirational. To be the first Ghanaian in two decades to contest in an individual final at the World Championships deserves national recognition. Similarly, our 4x100m relay team has made Ghana proud with a new national record. I believe both Parliament and the Presidency must honour these athletes for the pride they have brought to our nation,” the MP mentioned.
“These athletes have carried the Ghanaian spirit of resilience and excellence onto the world stage. Their success shows that with proper investment, talent identification, and preparation, Ghana can achieve even greater milestones,” She added.
The Sports Fund Bill, which is anticipated to offer long-term funding for international competition and talent development, is another measure she reaffirmed her support for.
