A cameraman with Bullet TV, a subsidiary of the Tobinco Media Group, was physically assaulted on Monday during the ongoing Save the Judiciary demonstration organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allied groups in Accra.
Edward Adjetey, who was on assignment covering the protest, was mistaken for a journalist from TV3 and attacked by one of the demonstrators, according to eyewitness accounts.
The incident occurred while Bullet TV was broadcasting live from the protest grounds. Edward was behind the camera filming alongside a colleague reporter when the attacker—approaching from behind—suddenly launched an assault.
“My friend thought he was from TV3,” one of the men near the attacker reportedly said in an attempt to explain the misunderstanding.
According to those present, Edward tried to capture footage of the attacker after the initial scuffle, but other demonstrators intervened. One supporter claimed they stepped in because “the suspect wanted to stab the journalist.”
The attack comes amid rising tensions between the NPP and TV3, a member of the Media General Group. In recent weeks, the NPP has accused the station of biased coverage and has blacklisted TV3, even going as far as discarding a TV3-branded microphone during a public event.
The Save the Judiciary protest is the latest in a series of actions by the NPP and its allies in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Demonstrators are demanding a reversal of the suspension, which they claim undermines judicial independence.
While political passions continue to flare, Monday’s attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists covering politically charged events—especially when media professionals are targeted based on mistaken identity or presumed affiliation.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the NPP leadership nor the Ghana Police Service has issued a public statement on the incident.
Bullet TV condemns this act of violence and reiterates its commitment to professional, impartial journalism. We call on all political actors to respect the role of the media and ensure the safety of journalists in the performance of their duties.
