The Ghanaian government has ordered the immediate shutdown of Gumah FM radio station in Bawku, following concerns from the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) over national security.
On February 11, 2025, an emergency meeting was held to review the growing security situation in Bawku and parts of the North East Region.
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations said intelligence reports indicated that the station had been used to incite violence and escalate tensions in the region.
The closure order was issued under Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008, which gives the National Communications Authority (NCA) the power to suspend or revoke frequency licenses in the interest of national security or public order.
As a result, Gumah FM is required to cease all operations immediately.
The Ministry also stated that it would continue to monitor the situation to prevent the creation of alternative platforms that could further destabilise the region.
It urged all media organisations to operate responsibly and adhere to the conditions of their broadcasting licences.
