The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frank Abrokwa, has been removed from his position following a violent disruption at the Council of State election in Kumasi on February 11, 2025, according to sources at the Police Headquarters.

The election, which was held to elect a new representative to the Council of State, descended into chaos when a group of unidentified assailants stormed the voting center, halting the sorting and counting of ballots. Eyewitnesses described how the attackers overturned tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials, prompting Electoral Commission officials to suspend the election process.

The unrest is believed to have been sparked by the unexpected defeat of Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, a candidate from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who had been widely considered the frontrunner. Supporters of the NDC candidate reportedly instigated the violence, demanding a recount of the votes.

Despite efforts by on-site security personnel to restore order, the situation quickly escalated, leading to the deployment of additional law enforcement officers to secure the area and safeguard electoral materials.

In the wake of the incident, DCOP Abrokwa has been reassigned to the Police Headquarters in Accra. The removal marks the latest chapter in the unfolding controversy surrounding the election’s disruptions.
