Traditional leaders from the Anlo Kingdom in Ghana’s Volta Region have issued a five-day ultimatum to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to identify the Member of Parliament (MP) responsible for insulting Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the MP for Klottey-Korle.
In a formal petition, the chiefs have requested the Speaker’s assistance in identifying the individual who made the offensive remark. The petition, which was also addressed to two other MPs who were initially suspected of the outburst but later denied involvement, demands that the perpetrator be identified by February 10.
The incident occurred during parliamentary proceedings on February 4, when a male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” This took place while the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was addressing the House amidst contentious discussions about the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.
Zanetor Rawlings is the eldest child of Ghana’s former military leader and civilian president, Jerry John Rawlings. The chiefs’ petition highlights their intent to hold the responsible party accountable, adding to the growing tension in Ghana’s parliament.
