There were similar expressions of discontentment in the past few weeks in other parts of the country

Some youth of the governing National Democratic Congress in Ashaiman, Accra, have vandalised the office of the party’s constituency chairman in a show of discontent over President John Mahama’s failure to appoint any of their people.

The youth, who say they have backed the party since 1992, complained that they feel ignored despite their unwavering support.

On Thursday, 6 February 2025, anger boiled over as a group of protesters stormed the office of constituency chairman Shaddad Umar Jallo, burning tyres and smashing glass doors in a dramatic display of discontent.

The demonstrators initially planned to block the Accra-Tema motorway in protest against President Mahama’s appointments.

However, local party leaders intervened to prevent an escalation.

Presiding Member of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Godwin Twumasi, warned of further unrest if the national leadership fails to act.

“We have become a laughingstock,” Mr Twumasi said. “Our friends in the NPP keep questioning why we remain loyal to the NDC when we are constantly overlooked.”

He pointed out that the only notable appointment for Ashaiman so far is Alfred Kwame Agbeshie’s role as 2nd Majority Leader in Parliament—a move seen as insufficient given the constituency’s electoral contribution.

The unrest stems from unmet campaign promises. Mr Twumasi recalled Mr Mahama’s commitment to appointing someone from Ashaiman and fixing the area’s poor road network, both of which remain unfulfilled.

“Ashaiman deserves representation in government, and it doesn’t have to be our MP. Anyone competent enough for a role will help ease tensions,” he added.

With pressure mounting, 2nd Deputy Constituency Youth Organiser Regina Agbagba called on Mr Mahama to intervene before frustrations spiral out of control.

“The youth have made it clear that our MP, Ernest Norgbey, worked tirelessly to help the NDC secure over 69,000 votes in the 2024 elections,” Ms Agbagba said. “President Mahama, along with top party leaders, made promises. Now, we’re demanding they follow through.”
