Amazon Web Services (AWS) will begin applying specific taxes and levies on its services provided to customers in Ghana, effective March 1, 2025.
The technology giant confirmed that the move aligns with local tax regulations set by the Ghanaian government.
AWS EMEA Sarl, the entity overseeing its regional operations, will be responsible for implementing these charges.
The taxation will include a 6% levy, which comprises the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy. In addition, a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be imposed on all service charges.
The changes will apply to all AWS customer accounts registered in Ghana, with VAT invoices issued accordingly from the implementation date.
AWS has advised customers to review and update their account details, particularly those who are VAT-registered businesses. Customers with a Tax Registration Number (TRN) have been encouraged to ensure their information is accurate to facilitate VAT deductions where applicable.
With cloud computing playing an increasingly critical role in business operations, the new tax obligations could have financial implications for companies relying on AWS infrastructure in Ghana. Businesses are expected to account for the additional costs as they continue leveraging AWS services for digital transformation and operations.
