Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has been convicted for contempt of court by the High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
The conviction stems from his defiance of an interim injunction that had barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.
Despite the court’s order, Mr.Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament.
Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe issued a bench warrant for Mr. Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear in court for sentencing.
The court had earlier restrained the MP from participating in the swearing-in process pending the resolution of a legal dispute.
Efforts by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to explain his absence from the court hearing were rejected by the judge, who maintained that the lawmaker had disregarded the court’s instructions.
With the bench warrant now in place, authorities are expected to take steps to enforce Mr.Kumi’s arrest and ensure compliance with the court’s ruling.
