Mr Mahama said the Akufo-Addo government was reckless with the economy

Nana Akufo-Addo and his government totally run Ghana’s economy down before leaving office, President John Mahama has said.

Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment on Thursday, 20 February 2025, Mr Mahama said: “We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering myself have been a criminal mishandling of our economy.”

“Ghana is a crime scene, actually,” Mr Mahama added.

“How a government can have been so reckless, I can not understand,” he noted.

He added: “But we’re faced with the reality, and our options are very few.”

Mr Mahama pointed out: “We can behave like the ostrich and hide our heads in the sand and let the exonomy crash, but then what effect will it have on Ghanaian households and everybody?”

To salvage the situation, Mr Mahama said he has directed the Finance Minister to cut expenditure at will.

“And so I’ve told him. I said, ‘Cut expenditure as much as you like. Even we ourselves in government machinery cut our budget as you like because we all must make those sacrifices.”
