Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted bail by the Accra High Court after nearly ten years in detention.
The court set the bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties.
Mr Afoko, who has been on remand since his arrest in 2015, filed a fresh bail application on February 17, marking his third attempt to secure bail during his lengthy trial.
His request was granted after a nine-year legal battle.
Mr Afoko is accused of conspiring with others to murder Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his home in Bolgatanga.
The trial began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, with the jury unable to reach a verdict on both charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. As a result, the court ordered a retrial.
Following the hung verdict, Mr Afoko was re-arrested and denied bail. However, his lawyers successfully argued for bail at a hearing on Friday, with the court granting his release pending trial.
