Despite the legal challenges, Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that Ofori-Atta would clear his name once he returns.

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is “traumatised” by being labeled a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), according to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 13, Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised that Ofori-Atta is not a fugitive and is currently undergoing medical treatment in the United States.

He reassured that the former minister, who has been the subject of multiple investigations, would return within a reasonable timeframe.

“I had an extensive conversation with him this morning,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said. “He’s deeply disturbed by the fugitive label but remains confident in his faith.

He is receiving medical care, and we’ve confirmed through the Chief of Staff that Ofori-Atta has formally notified the government of his situation. He will return soon.”

The OSP is investigating  Mr. Ofori-Atta in connection with several high-profile cases, including the controversial loss reduction contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Jao, the National Cathedral procurement deal, and the SML-GRA contract.

The OSP has stated it will take all necessary steps to ensure Ofori-Atta appears to answer questions regarding these investigations.
