The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has been given an undisclosed bail sum with two sureties. Following an unsuccessful attempt to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025, Chairman Wontumi voluntarily reported to the police CID headquarters on Monday, May 26, 2025.
He arrived accompanied by Andy Appiah-Kubi, a former member of parliament for Asante-Akim North, and his legal advisor, former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
After being questioned by the police, Chairman Wontumi told reporters that during questioning, questions about his alleged involvement in Galamsey surfaced. He categorically denied any involvement in illegal mining.
He mentioned that he presented his license as evidence that he was conducting lawful mining operations.
“I came to show them my license to prove that I am not into galamsey. They also claimed that I have been engaging in mining in forest, but I refuted that claim and challenged them to provide evidence.
“They granted me bail with two sureties.”
The charge against Chairman Wontumi was mining without permission. Wontumi’s appearance before the CID comes after a dramatic turn of events last Friday, May 23, when a unified team of police officers and National Security agents attempted to arrest him at his home in a widely reported but unsuccessful attempt.
Online videos showing heavily armed personnel encircling his home generated a lot of public interest in the incident, and supporters claimed it was an attempt at intimidation with political motivations.
Since the Ghana Police Service has not yet released an official statement regarding the nature of the investigation, the details of the questioning are still unknown.
