President John Mahama is due to speak to global political and business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos today during a high-level side event on the Accra Reset initiative.

The event, scheduled for Thursday, January 22, marks the first time the Global South–led initiative will be convened at the annual Davos meeting.

President Mahama is described as leading the Presidential Council of the Accra Reset, an initiative meant to strengthen sovereign capacity and reimagine international cooperation amid growing global uncertainty, according to a statement released by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications.

According to the release, President William Samoei Ruto of Kenya, President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt are among the other members of the Presidential Council who will attend the meeting.

Prime Minister James Marape will represent Papua New Guinea, while Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent Nigeria.

The statement said a number of former Heads of State and Government will also take part, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, former Mauritian President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

They comprise the Accra Reset’s Guardians Circle. Following its debut at the 2025 United Nations General Assembly and endorsement at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, the initiative’s priority programs will be publicly launched at the Davos summit.

The statement claims that the Accra Reset is emerging at a time when trade tensions are rising, global crises are overlapping, great-power competition is intensifying, and global aid frameworks are becoming weaker.

President Mahama, the statement said, considers the initiative to complement his domestic Resetting Ghana Agenda.

The statement noted that Ghana, as a founding member, understands that effective governance is anchored not only in domestic reforms but also in the existence of a more just and balanced international order.

It added that President Mahama has argued that sovereignty involves the capacity to implement national development goals while building strategic partnerships across Africa and the Global South.
