As voters head to the polls for a rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the public that there will be no military deployment during the process.
Announcing the decision on his official Facebook page, Dr Boamah emphasised government’s commitment to preserving peace and protecting democratic values.“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in Ablekuma North Constituency,” he wrote, stressing repeatedly that “there will be no military deployment.”
The Minister’s reiteration three times within his post aimed at calming tensions and dispelling fears of intimidation. His statement comes amid concerns following the Electoral Commission’s decision to hold a rerun in select polling stations.
Referencing Ghana’s electoral history, Dr Boamah drew attention to past incidents of violence, including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the loss of eight lives during the 2020 elections.
“Let’s learn from past experiences… and prioritize citizen safety and security,” he urged.
He expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service’s capability to manage today’s exercise smoothly.
“The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job,” he affirmed.
Dr. Boamah ended his message with a call for peaceful participation and optimism about Ghana’s future leadership.
