Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa arrived in Burkina Faso on Thursday for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening security cooperation and political ties between the two West African neighbors.

Ablakwa was received at the airport by Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré and Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Kenneth Akibate. The visit comes days after a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso killed several Ghanaian traders and left others injured.

Before departing Accra, Ablakwa visited the 37 Military Hospital to express solidarity with nationals who were airlifted back to Ghana following the February 14 assault.

Officials say the minister will hold high-level consultations and sign agreements to boost cooperation in security, governance and regional stability.

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama condemned the attack, calling it a stark reminder of the dangers faced by traders in West Africa’s volatile sub-region. “Our Ghanaian brothers and sisters were ambushed while conducting legitimate business, and some tragically lost their lives,”.
