A devastating fire has destroyed more than 50 shops behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, leaving scores of traders counting their losses.
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, swept through structures largely used as warehouses for phone accessories. Some of the affected shops also doubled as residential spaces and food vending points in the bustling commercial enclave.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Speaking to the media, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, DO II Desmond Ackah, said firefighters encountered serious challenges accessing the fire scene due to the area’s mixed-use layout.
“The setup made access very difficult, but our personnel worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control,” he stated.
He urged affected traders to remain calm as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
Meanwhile, the Queen Mother of Circle, Manye Tsu Kpapa, has appealed to government to redevelop the area into a modern, well-managed market, where traders can operate safely under proper supervision by the local assembly.

Fire officials have cautioned the public to stay away from the scene, warning that some weakened structures could collapse. Residents and motorists have also been advised to avoid the area and exercise caution until it is declared safe.
As cleanup efforts begin, affected traders are appealing for support and intervention to help them rebuild their businesses and livelihoods.
