Former Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Hon. Paul A. Twum-Barimah, has raised alarm over the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey), calling for immediate government action.

“This is alarming, and the government must up its game. Galamsey is gradually destroying this country, and we must all be extremely worried,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

His comments come in response to disturbing findings by forensic pathologist Prof. Dr. Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, who revealed that over 500 cases of spontaneous abortions in Ghana are linked to toxic heavy metals found in the placenta—traced directly to illegal mining activities.

Dr. Sampene, a former Head of Pathology at KNUST and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has been studying the effects of galamsey since 2019. He warned of the serious health risks and criticised leaders for their slow response and the politicisation of the issue.

The revelations have sparked public concern, with many calling for a united national effort to tackle the galamsey menace once and for all.
