At the current World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah of Ghana has secured a spot in the women’s high jump final. Yeboah placed ninth overall and qualified for the final on Sunday by clearing 1.92 meters in the qualification round.
Maria Zodzik of Poland, Michaela Hruba of the Czech Republic, Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson of Australia, Angelina Topic of Serbia, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the current Olympic champion, and Morgan Lake of Great Britain were among the top contenders when she completed.
She becomes the first athlete from Ghana to advance to the final of their event at this year’s championships, making her qualification a historic accomplishment.
Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa, who qualified, spoke afterwards, expressing her happiness and pleasure at reaching the final. “I needed this. After the Olympic Games, I went through a lot, but I’m happy I could make the final. I’m so happy,” she expressed.
Since Ignatius Gaisah and Margaret Simpson in 2005, Rose Yeboah is the first athlete from Ghana to advance to the championships’ individual event final.
Simpson took home bronze in the women’s heptathlon while Gaisah took home silver in the men’s long jump at the Helsinki competition.
