The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted an attempted robbery of a gold consignment valued at over GHC 1.3 million following an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of three suspects.
The suspects identified as Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey were apprehended on Thursday, June 26, 2025, along the Accra–Akuapem–Mamfe road, just as the carefully coordinated heist was unfolding.
The operation was launched by the Special Support Unit (SSU) at the National Headquarters after intelligence gathered on Wednesday, June 25, revealed a plot involving a gold dealer’s driver and an accomplice posing as a bodyguard. The duo had allegedly planned to rob the dealer during a scheduled gold delivery the following day.
According to preliminary investigations, suspect Kenneth Khartey was first arrested near Akuapem–Mamfe while trailing a Land Cruiser carrying the consignment aboard a motorbike. Hours later, Zibo and Yussif were apprehended at East Legon inside an unregistered blue Hyundai vehicle. Police reports indicate that the pair had procured firearms, motorbikes, and a getaway vehicle to execute the heist. They were also allegedly responsible for arranging the sale of the stolen gold.
Law enforcement successfully rescued the gold dealer and secured the full consignment, which weighs approximately 1.2 kilograms and is valued at GHC 1,350,343.53.
All three suspects are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. Police say they will be arraigned before court in the coming days.
