A supporter of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Theophilus Thompson, pleaded not guilty in court on Monday, 9 June 2025, following his arrest for allegedly assaulting Multimedia Groups’ journalist, Latif Iddrisu.

Thompson, 55, was caught on video alongside other suspects still at large allegedly assaulting Iddrisu during a live coverage of the detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, at the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

The courtroom was packed with observers, including senior NPP executives such as National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) and National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, who came to support Thompson.

Thompson’s lawyer argued that his client is innocent, has a permanent residence, and is not a flight risk. Citing Section 97(4) of Act 30, the defense stressed that bail should not be denied as a form of punishment.

However, the State Attorney opposed the bail application, stating that investigations are ongoing and some suspects remain at large. She argued that granting bail could allow interference with evidence.

Despite the defense’s objections, the court denied bail, remanding Thompson into custody. The case has been adjourned to 18 June 2025.
