In the vibrant community of Nungua, the air was thick with anticipation and joy on Saturday, February 22, 2025. The Ga-Adangme Muslim Union’s Nungua West branch was poised to enstool their new leaders in a ceremony steeped in tradition and cultural significance. Among those to be honored was Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, affectionately known as Naa Gamu, who was to ascend as the queen mother alongside her husband, the newly appointed chief.
The ceremony commenced under the golden afternoon sun, with dignitaries and community members gathering to witness the historic event. As the rituals progressed, eight individuals—four men and four women—were called forth to support the new leaders, each swearing oaths of allegiance. The atmosphere was electric, a harmonious blend of drumming, dancing, and the palpable pride of a community united.
However, the jubilation was abruptly shattered. Amidst the celebratory gunfire—a customary practice intended to honor and announce the new leaders—a single shot rang out, distinct and jarring. Naa Gamu collapsed, clutching her thigh, the vibrant white of her ceremonial attire rapidly staining with blood. Panic ensued as attendees rushed to her aid, their joyous expressions morphing into masks of horror and disbelief.
Immediate efforts were made to save her. She was swiftly transported to multiple medical facilities, yet at each turn, the family faced devastating obstacles. According to her brother, Raphael Nii Bortey Agbli, they were denied even basic first aid at the initial hospital and were redirected to another facility without the provision of an ambulance. By the time they reached the Ridge Hospital, it was too late; the medical team removed the bullet and dressed her wound, but Naa Gamu had already succumbed to her injuries.
The community was left grappling with profound grief and a multitude of questions. How could a day of celebration descend into such tragedy? Preliminary police investigations revealed that Samuel Adjei, a participant in the ceremony, had allegedly discharged live ammunition from a single-barrel gun, the fatal shot striking Naa Gamu in the right thigh. Adjei was promptly arrested and, on February 26, arraigned before the District Court on charges of murder. He has been remanded into police custody, with a subsequent court appearance scheduled for March 12, 2025.
The incident has ignited a broader discourse on the safety protocols surrounding traditional ceremonies. The use of firearms, intended as a symbol of honor and festivity, now stands scrutinized under the harsh light of this tragedy. Community leaders and cultural custodians are called upon to reevaluate these practices, ensuring that the preservation of tradition does not come at the cost of human life.
