Sokode Senior High Technical School in the Volta Region has been shut down indefinitely by the Ghana Education Service (GES) following violent clashes between students and residents of the Sokode community.

The unrest, which erupted on Saturday, February 22, was fueled by longstanding tensions between the two groups and resulted in multiple injuries.

Among the wounded is a journalist from Ho-based Swiss FM, who was severely injured while reporting on the incident.

Several students and residents also sustained various injuries.

In response to the escalating violence, police and military forces have been deployed to both the school and the surrounding community to restore order and prevent further conflict.

Volta Regional GES Director, Francis Yao Agbemeadi, confirmed the school’s closure and highlighted that the decision was made to prioritise the safety of students and staff.
