Ghana will commemorate its 68th Independence Day under the theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset,” the government has announced.
The scaled-back celebrations, which will be held at Jubilee House, come as part of efforts to cut government spending amidst ongoing economic challenges.
The decision to move the event away from its traditional large-scale stadium format follows a directive from former President John Dramani Mahama.
At a press briefing on February 22, Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, explained that the theme resonates with the current national mood.
He pointed to the recent elections and a broad consensus across the political spectrum that Ghana needs a reset, which is reflected in the theme.
“Reflect, Review, and Reset” also captures the spirit of modesty surrounding this year’s events, with a shorter ceremony aimed at addressing concerns about attendees fainting in the heat.
The reduced scale will also bring cost savings to the state.
Despite the downsized nature of the event, key elements of the Independence Day celebrations, including the flag-raising ceremony, the presidential address, and a parade, will still take place, the Independence Day Planning Committee confirmed.
