Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged African countries to shift their focus from foreign aid and work together to build a self-sufficient continent.
Speaking at the launch of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for African leaders to prioritize collaboration and sustainable economic policies.
“Too often, African nations look outside for solutions when the answers lie within our own borders,” Akufo-Addo said. “We must reject the notion that aid is the key to our development. No country has ever achieved lasting prosperity by depending on handouts.”
His comments come amid growing concerns over Africa’s economic challenges, including inflation, debt burdens, and disruptions to global supply chains, worsened by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former ECOWAS chair called for greater intra-continental trade and investment, stressing that Africa’s future lies in self-sufficiency and cooperation. He highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key initiative capable of unlocking the continent’s economic potential.
“To overcome our historical economic challenges, we must fully embrace the AfCFTA,” he said. “Removing trade barriers and promoting economic integration will lay the foundation for sustainable growth.”
Akufo-Addo also cautioned against the long-term consequences of relying on foreign aid, noting that it often comes with conditions that may not align with Africa’s long-term interests. He urged African nations to focus on investing in their people, industries, and agriculture to ensure true self-reliance.
Turning to the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria, Akufo-Addo called for stronger cooperation between the two countries, citing their shared history, culture, and responsibility to lead West Africa toward economic independence.
“When we work together, we achieve more,” he said. “Ghana and Nigeria have demonstrated this. We must deepen our partnerships in trade, energy, and technology for the mutual benefit of our people.”
