Ghana is currently battling outbreaks of cholera and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) nationwide.

Recent data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) show a significant increase in infections, raising concerns about the strain on the country’s healthcare system.

In response, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited has made a substantial donation of pharmaceutical products to help tackle the outbreaks.

The donation, valued at GHS 250,000, includes vital medications and hygiene products such as Lufart, Entramol, Omal hand sanitiser, AMOCEF, and other treatments essential for managing infections and symptoms.

The supplies were handed over directly to the GHS to ensure swift distribution to affected areas.

Speaking at the event, Dr Christopher Mensah, Managing Director of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting national health efforts.

“In a time like this, where the whole country is challenged with outbreaks of CSM and cholera, our Group CEO, Dr Samuel Amo Tobbin—who also serves as the President of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana—saw the need to step up and support through the right agency, the Ghana Health Service. During the COVID-19 period, cholera cases were almost non-existent due to hand hygiene measures. We believe prioritising sanitation once again will help curb this outbreak,” he said.

Dr Mensah noted that the donated products include hand sanitisers, antibiotics, pain relievers, rehydration therapies, and injections, all of which are critical in managing the diseases.

Receiving the donation, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and assured the public that immediate action would be taken.

“We appreciate this generous support from Tobinco Pharmaceuticals. Once received, these medications and supplies will be promptly distributed to affected regions. We are all in this together, and we hope others will also come forward to contribute.”

The donation comes at a crucial time as cholera and meningitis cases continue to rise.

Health experts say poor sanitation, contaminated water sources, and seasonal weather conditions are key factors driving the outbreaks.

The GHS is urging citizens to follow strict hygiene practices, report symptoms early, and seek medical care promptly to help curb the spread.
