Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to overhauling the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, vowing to address its structural challenges and enhance educational outcomes.
Speaking in the Central Region on Thursday as part of his ‘Thank You Tour,’ Mr Mahama identified education as a key policy priority and outlined plans to secure dedicated funding for the programme.
He also proposed decentralising food procurement to improve efficiency in school operations.
“Education will remain a priority, and we will work to provide the best possible learning environment for our children at all levels and ensure that our youth have the skills needed to compete in the global economy,” Mr Mahama said, adding: “We plan to improve the Free SHS programme to secure dedicated funding and decentralised food procurement.”
In addition to secondary education reforms, Mr Mahama announced, “We will introduce a ‘no academic fees’ policy offering financial aid to continuing students and expand infrastructure for tertiary institutions.”
He also pledged to expand infrastructure at tertiary institutions to accommodate increasing enrolment.
The proposed reforms come amid ongoing debates over the sustainability and effectiveness of the Free SHS initiative, which has faced criticism over funding constraints and logistical bottlenecks.
