The government has announced plans to extend the duration of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from the current five-day schedule to eight days.

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, said the move is intended to reduce stress on candidates and give them more time to prepare between examination papers.

Speaking at Aburi Girls Senior High School on Wednesday, June 10, Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged concerns about the current timetable, which requires students to complete the examination within a single week.

“I understand that our schedule of the exams for BECE was just Monday to Friday, and that put many of you under some stress,” he said.

According to the Minister, the revised arrangement will see the examination begin on a Wednesday and end on the following Wednesday, creating additional preparation time for candidates and allowing them to benefit from a weekend break during the examination period.

“Accordingly, the government is reviewing the BECE exams calendar. So now the BECE will begin on Wednesday and end the following Wednesday so that adequate time is given to our learners to prepare for BECE across the country,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu said the changes form part of efforts to improve the examination experience for students and ensure they are better prepared for each paper.

The implementation of the revised examination timetable will be overseen by the Ghana Education Service, he added.

If approved and implemented, the new schedule will mark a significant change to the administration of the BECE nationwide.
