The People’s National Party (PNP) has called for urgent national action against child defilement and abuse, warning that the country risks destroying its future if young girls are not adequately protected.

In a statement released on May 10, 2026, to coincide with Mother’s Day celebrations, the party said it was inappropriate to celebrate mothers while many girl children continue to suffer abuse, trauma, and exploitation.

“You cannot celebrate mothers while upcoming mothers are being destroyed in silence,” the statement said.

Disturbing Allegations Highlighted

The party referenced a case discussed on Adom FM involving a mother who alleged that her daughter had been repeatedly defiled by her own father, reportedly a police officer, between the ages of 10 and 14.

According to the statement, the abuse allegedly resulted in two abortions and an HIV infection. The mother also reportedly expressed frustration over difficulties in obtaining justice despite reporting the matter.

The PNP described the case as “a national emergency” requiring urgent institutional accountability and stronger protection mechanisms for children.

Calls for National Response

The party urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to signs of abuse and to be cautious about whom they entrust with the care of their children.

It noted that many perpetrators of abuse are often people within family or trusted social circles, including fathers, stepfathers, relatives, and close associates.

The PNP also called on several institutions to intensify public education and intervention efforts, including the Ghana Police Service Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the National Commission for Civic Education, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, religious bodies, schools, traditional authorities, and the media.

Demand for Accountability

The party stressed that child defilement should no longer be treated as a private family issue but as a national crisis requiring collective action.

It urged media organisations to dedicate more attention to exposing abuse cases and educating the public on reporting mechanisms and victim support services.

The statement was signed by Janet Asana Nabla, Chairperson and Leader of the People’s National Party.
