Abdul Karim Zito officially resigned as the head coach of Asante Kotoko on Monday, February 9, 2026. His departure follows the club’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup Round of 16 after a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Aduana FC on February 8.
The resignation took place less than 24 hours after the FA Cup exit and just days before the high-profile “Super Clash” against Accra Hearts of Oak scheduled for February 15, 2026.
Zito cited a “family issue” and a mutual agreement with management to step down, despite the club’s initial attempts to persuade him to stay.
Assistant coach Prince Owusu has been named interim head coach, supported by Hamza Obeng, to lead the team in their upcoming fixture against Hearts of Oak.
Zito’s Tenure at Asante Kotoko (2025–2026) Appointed in July 2025, Zito led the “Porcupine Warriors” through a highly productive but eventually inconsistent period.
During his short tenure, Zito won four trophies, including the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup and the President’s Cup. Upon leaving, Zito emphasised his status as a club legend, noting he was happy with his contributions despite the difficult timing of his exit.
