Air Tanzania officially launched its flight operations to Ghana on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, marking a significant milestone in African aviation. The new route establishes a vital link between Dar es Salaam and Accra, with a scheduled stopover in Lagos, Nigeria.

The inaugural flight landed at Kotoka International Airport around 5:00 PM GMT, where it was honored with a ceremonial water salute. A grand reception was held to welcome the Tanzanian Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, along with other dignitaries from Tanzania.

In his remarks, Prof. Mbarawa expressed confidence that the new service would strengthen bilateral ties and enhance trade opportunities between Ghana and Tanzania. Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of seamless travel across the continent. “Today marks another milestone for us, seeing our own from Africa, helping to connect our people, helping to make travel easy for our people,” he said.

Nikpe further noted his delight at Air Tanzania’s expansion into Ghana, adding: “It gives pleasure that Air Tanzania has taken this step to commence its flight from Dar es Salaam to Accra and Lagos. It is our hope and belief that this will improve connectivity and create that atmosphere and further promote trade and tourism within ourselves.”

Also present was Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who highlighted the cultural and tourism benefits of the new route. In her words: “This contributes to the game changer in the culture and tourism ecosystem. We are now open for a direct pipeline for Tanzania and East Africans in general, to experience the ‘akwaba spirit’.”

The addition of Ghana brings Air Tanzania’s international reach to 32 countries, a remarkable achievement for an airline that has undergone extensive restructuring since 2016. The carrier will operate three flights weekly to Accra via Lagos, reinforcing its commitment to safe, reliable, and affordable air travel. Officials emphasized that this expansion underscores Air Tanzania’s ambition to become a premier airline connecting Africa to the world.
