The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with selected municipal assemblies in the Greater Accra Region, has announced a major citywide decongestion exercise set to begin Saturday, February 1, 2026.
The operation will target unauthorised structures, street vendors, and transport operators encroaching on pedestrian walkways and roadways, which have contributed to severe traffic congestion and disruption of human movement across the capital.
The exercise, coordinated by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), will take place in the jurisdictions of:
-Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA)
-Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly
-Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly
-Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly
-La-Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly
-Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly
The assemblies stressed that the initiative is part of the government’s Reset Agenda, aimed at restoring order, improving sanitation, and enhancing the city’s overall appearance. Officials emphasised that the exercise is not intended to frustrate traders, but to create a safer, cleaner, and more organised Accra.
AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey urged traders, transport operators, and occupants of unauthorised structures to voluntarily vacate affected areas before February 1 to avoid disruptions.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon. Linda Ocloo also called for public cooperation, stressing that adherence to demarcated red lines and collaboration with authorities will be crucial to ensuring a smooth and successful exercise.
City officials noted that public cooperation is key to restoring order, improving sanitation, and preserving the dignity of the nation’s capital.
