The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Nayiri Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has reiterated his commitment to lasting peace in Bawku provided that the concerns of his people are duly addressed.
This position was communicated through a member of his legal team during an interview on Noon Target on Bullet TV. It follows an earlier statement from the Nayiri rejecting the mediation report presented to President John Dramani Mahama by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In the statement, the Nayiri said the report did not reflect his engagements or those of his mediation team.
Speaking on the news, Lawyer Majeed Nembe emphasized the importance of consensus in the peace process: “We are dealing with mediation here, and in mediation the factions have to come to an agreement. If the concerns are addressed, I believe that definitely we’ll find lasting peace.”
He further explained that the Nayiri’s willingness to engage in mediation stemmed from his genuine interest in ending the protracted conflict in Bawku.
“The Nayiri’s interest in finding lasting peace to the conflict in Bawku is what inspired him to subject himself to the mediation process,” Nembe noted.
The lawyer added that efforts are currently underway to ensure the President is made aware of the Nayiri’s concerns, stressing that addressing them is key to achieving durable peace in the troubled area.
Background
The Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga early today formally rejected the mediation report on the Bawku Chieftaincy Dispute presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on December 16, 2025.
In a strongly worded statement issued on December 17, the Nayiri distanced himself and the people of Mamprugu from what he described as a “so-called mediation report and recommendations,” insisting that the document neither reflects his engagements with the Asantehene nor the position of his duly constituted mediation team.
The statement follows the presentation of a roadmap by the Asantehene-led mediation committee aimed at resolving the long-running Bawku conflict, which has periodically erupted into violence and remains one of Ghana’s most complex chieftaincy disputes.
