The United States and Ghana could renew one of the World Cup’s most enduring rivalries when the draw for the 2026 tournament is made on 5 December.
The two nations have met three times on football’s biggest stage, with Ghana claiming victories in 2006 and 2010 before the Americans struck back in 2014. The Black Stars’ extra-time win in South Africa remains the most memorable, sending Ghana into the quarterfinals and eliminating the United States.

Former USA captain Landon Donovan, now a pundit with Fox Sports, admitted he still feels the sting of that defeat. Donovan scored in the 2-1 loss before Asamoah Gyan’s decisive strike, and says he would welcome a rematch in 2026.
“I’d love to see us face Ghana again,” Donovan said, reflecting on the fixture that has become a hallmark of recent World Cup history.

The 2026 tournament will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the draw taking place on Friday.
