The remote community of Torgome Tsita in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region is celebrating a historic leap in education following the commissioning of its first-ever six-unit classroom block with offices.

For decades, children in this fishing community endured exhausting journeys — some walking more than 15 kilometers — to attend school in neighbouring towns.

With no dedicated school structure, pupils from Primary One to Six were cramped into a small church building that served as a temporary classroom, forcing many children to drop out over time.

That long struggle has now come to an end thanks to the collaboration between TopAfric, a Germany-based non-governmental organization, and the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Hon. Rockson Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor. Their joint effort has brought renewed hope and joy to the people of Torgome Tsita.

Our reporter, Christian Ahodie, has more in the following report:

For over 50 years, Torgome Tsita lacked access to quality education. With inadequate infrastructure and the absence of a proper school building, children often traveled long distances by foot or bus just to learn. Those who managed to attend classes did so in a small, overcrowded church.

The newly constructed six-unit classroom block, complete with offices and furniture, now offers the community a dignified and conducive learning environment.

At the commissioning ceremony, Madam Ivy Kumordzi, Project Coordinator of TopAfric, urged residents to take good care of the facility. She emphasized that proper maintenance would attract more development projects to the area.

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Aikins Okraku, described the project as timely and transformational, noting that it will greatly improve teaching and learning.

Representing the MP, the Assembly Member for the Torgome Electoral Area, Mr. Jonas Abor, acknowledged the immense challenges the community had faced and encouraged residents to protect the new facility.

The District Chief Executive for South Dayi, Mr. Courage Kokoroko, commended the initiative and assured that all dilapidated school structures across the district would be renovated to enhance educational standards.

With the new school building now in place, the people of Torgome Tsita are optimistic that this marks the beginning of greater development and opportunities for the community.
