One person has been killed and six others injured after gunmen ambushed two commercial buses near Bawku in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

The attack occurred in Binduri, close to Bawku, as the buses—carrying students and traders—were escorted by military personnel from Bawku to Bolgatanga.

The armed assailants opened fire at Bazua, wounding seven passengers.

The injured were taken to a health facility for treatment, but one later succumbed to his injuries.

The motive for the ambush remains unclear.

However, local sources suggest it may be linked to the recent killing of a woman and her two children in their home at Tinsongo.

Reports indicate that unidentified gunmen stormed the residence searching for the woman’s husband. When they failed to find him, they allegedly murdered his family instead.

Security forces, including the police and military, have since taken control of the area to restore calm.

The latest violence adds to the growing number of fatalities since conflict reignited in the region in October 2024, bringing the total death toll to 46.

The escalation in attacks has prompted renewed calls from residents for security agencies to strengthen patrols, particularly along key transport routes.
